The phone box in Burnett Road in Streetly Village had been earmarked for the scrap heap last year after BT put in a removal notice up in January. They gave 90-days notice but Streetly resident Anne-Marie Goodchild ‘called’ in and spotted the sign. The former BT worker contacted the head of payphones to put a hold on its removal and set to work.
Now the phone box, next to the Co-op store, has been renamed The Exchange and is stocked full of books, DVDs, CDs and even seeds, for anyone to take home and enjoy.
Anne-Marie leads a six-strong team – the Friends of The Exchange – along with Will and Mary Wheeler, Kate Blabey, Phil Campion and Ramona Mihailescu. The group have agreed to look after the site, after they reached an agreement with Shenstone Parish Council which is officially responsible for it.
